How to install a sensor
Before You Start
You'll need:
The SmartAC App downloaded on your phone
Your Gen2 sensor kit
Optional, but very helpful:
A few minutes near your HVAC system
Your air filter
Step 1: Create Your Account
Open the SmartAC app and enter your email
We'll email you a one-time code, no password needed to get started
Provide your name and service address
Step 2: Scan the Sensor Box
Grab the sensor box, no need to unpack it yet
Find the QR code on the side panel, next to the serial number
Tap Open the camera and scan it
Step 3: Turn on Your Sensor
Press the button on your sensor to wake it up. The app connects to it automatically.
Step 4: Find a Supply Vent
Pick the vent that most affects the room your thermostat controls, and keep it clear of drapes and furniture.
Ceiling or wall vent (plastic): use the included clip to attach it
Ceiling or wall vent (metal): just place it directly on the vent, the sensor's built-in magnets hold it in place
Floor vent: lift the grill out and mount the sensor inside, on the duct wall
Have a smart thermostat? Place the SmartAC sensor on a supply vent that the thermostat controls, often in the same room or on the same floor. Since the thermostat's set point is what drives your system, keeping the sensor on a supply vent nearby gives you the most accurate picture.
Once it's placed, tap It's in place.
Step 5: Photograph the Sensor
Take a photo of the sensor mounted on the vent. Line it up in the frame and tap Capture. The photo can be helpful to locate the sensor once it's time to replace batteries. It also helps our support team if you face issues after setup.
Step 6: Name the Spot
Choose from a list of common spots (like "Bedroom" or "Living Room"), or pick Somewhere else to type your own. This just helps you tell your sensors apart later.
If you pick Somewhere else, you'll need to type in your own name for the spot before you can continue.
Step 7: Add More Details (Optional)
These details improve your HVAC system insights.
Add your HVAC system (nameplate photo)
What’s a nameplate and where do I find it? - A nameplate is a metal or sticker label on your AC or furnace that lists the serial and model numbers. It’s usually near the bottom or on the inside door panel.
Add your filter details (brand, size, MERV rating, when it was last replaced)
Step 8: Confirm and Finish
The app briefly shows "Saving your sensor" while it adds it to your home, then confirms you're set up. From here you can tap Done to go to your home dashboard, or Install another sensor to keep going.
You'll see readings from your home within the hour.
